East-West Handbag
Some shapes carry history in their seams. During World War II, as women across the world stepped into factories, offices, and roles that had never been theirs before, a practical silhouette emerged. Long, open, and wide enough to hold knitting needles tucked alongside the essentials of a working day. It was a bag designed around a life in motion.
The East-West was born from that same spirit: a bag shaped by women's work, and now made by it.
When Michel, a Haitian artisan at Deux Mains first heard this story, something in it resonated. Women carrying their craft with them. Women building livelihoods through skilled hands. That meaning didn't feel distant, it felt familiar.
The East-West holds that lineage. Its elongated, structured silhouette is faithful to the wartime original. Wide enough to carry what a full day demands, beautiful enough to carry anywhere. But this version is rooted in Port-au-Prince, shaped by the hands of a woman whose work, like those before her, is quietly changing what's possible.
Deux Mains "two hands" in French was founded on the belief that skilled artisan work should create lasting opportunity in Haiti. Every East-West bag is a product of that belief, hand-stitched with the same care that has always defined women making something out of nothing.
